Found this whilst scrolling through DJ Lobsterdust's blog - a video mash-up of his Unk vs. Avril Lavigne ft. Toni Basil - "Walkin’ Out Yo Girlfriend." Plus, I was tired of seeing my big mouth on the top of this blog.
Check this out! Vox has a widget-slash-tool that will embed a music player that pulls in Songs from throughout the Vox community. The one below was created with the tag "mash-up" (of course).
But you can use any tag, user, or Vox Group to grab songs. Or, leave it all blank, and get a little of EVERYTHING! You can also set it to shuffle. How did I miss this?
And, you can embed the code on ANY website, not just Vox. Visit the Vox DJ right here!
It is far from perfect (I'd like multiple tags, a longer scrolling song list, a way to add it to Yahoo Widgets, please) but it is a great way to explore "musically" what is happening on Vox.
How did I not know about this?
So, have you seen the DJ WiiJ?
DJ ! (shift) has worked out a way to use the Wii-mote and Traktor software to give a new, ahem, spin to live mixing.
Not so much a great mix, but I am really impressed with the creative mind that came up with this.
Continuing on my theme of watching DJ's to their thing on YouTube, here is a neat novelty.
Using the Mixman DM2 toy to make a great sounding DJ Mix.
Here is another DJ using the Mixman with a software program to "mix video."
I just stumbled upon this crazy YouTube video genre - live DJ sets.
Now I am sure there are more, but I've been diggin on the work of DJ Praise (the Christian Clubber).
For some reason, there has been a lot of negative comments on his mixes. I guess people aren't too forgiving of someone learning the ropes. I think he does a great mix, and while I am sure more experienced DJs are out there, not many are sharing videos of their techniques. I think it shows a lot of confidence. Clearly there are superior DJs out there, but for a regular guy, he is pretty good.
(I always wanted to be a DJ, like, as a hobby. I have a HUGE collection of 12" singles, many from old remix services like Hot Tracks, Mixx-It, Powerhouse, and Rhythm Stick.)
I think what I like about his mixes are that I know most of the songs, as opposed to some DJs that mix things I've never heard of before (you see, I don't go clubbing, so if it isn't from the 80's-1998, or a BIG pop hit, I won't know what the song is).
If I had anything to say about his mixes, I'd say I'd like to hear less overly sexy songs themes and adult language (maybe the radio versions?) in the song selections. Maybe toss in a few songs from Christian artists like (Tait, Toby Mac, etc).
I don't know much about DJing, but I would like to know how you mix like that - turntables, mixer - with a laptop, but never change LPs. How does that work?
Keep up the good mixes, keep learning, and be strong, remember the enemy's attacks come in many forms.
You can read more about DJ Praise on his blog and listen to his work on YouTube.
A comment I left at Rizo's blog about Dance music made me want to post more details. So I am composing this hacked together post.
For those that love DJ mix sets (me!), AOL Music has just the thing for you!
Each week The AOL Dance & Electronica site has several DJ sets free for your streaming pleasure. Usually they post 2-3 sets, and once they are removed from the page, they are hard to find again. So, be sure to visit the site each week.
This week AOL features "techno gurus Matthew Dear and Ryan Elliott...as part of the DJ series, Fridays Off the 405, at the Getty Center, curated by Flavorpill."
There is also an exclusive mix by Basment Jaxx.
So, just tossin' it out there for those who like dance and mix shows. That's all I got, word.
